As World Cup fever grips the planet, Scotland’s turbulent record in the tournament will be in the spotlight at a gathering in Dundee this week.

Sports commentators Archie MacPherson and Chick Young will join former manager Craig Brown for a dribble down memory lane at the Queen’s Hotel on Sunday.

The event has been organised by Tayside-based Choose Events Group to mark a milestone many Scotland fans might rather overlook.

Choose Events spokesman David Burns said: “We thought with the World Cup upon us and with it being 20 years since Scotland last qualified we wanted to arrange an event based around Scotland’s memories of the World Cup, particularly France 98.

“Craig was the manager of Scotland and Chick and Archie covered it for the Scottish media.

“The afternoon will consist of many stories from these three around their experiences, followed by England against Panama on the big screen.

“Guests will get a pie and pint at half time.”

Archie MacPherson commentated on all 18 Scotland games from the 1974-98 World Cups. Craig Brown will share his insights into everything from how it feels to face Brazil to Scotland’s downfall since France 98.

The session will be the latest in a series from Choose Events Group.

David from Dundee and co-founder Mark Anderson from Arbroath brought Walter Smith and Archie Knox to Forfar to revive their Rangers nine-in-a-row partnership on Saturday.

The legendary management team joined forces to speak at a testimonial dinner for the manager of Forfar West End.

The evening at the Strathmore Hall was part of celebrations to mark Daryl McKenzie’s testimonial year after 11 years with the club.

David said: “We were delighted when both Walter and Archie accepted.

“Both are complete gentlemen and were happy to be involved.”

Knox started his managerial career at Forfar Athletic before becoming assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson.

He worked with Sir Alex at Aberdeen and Manchester United before joining Walter Smith as Rangers equalled Celtic’s record haul of nine consecutive title wins.

Choose Events has already brought a string of big names to Tayside, including Alex McLeish, Arthur Numan, Paul Merson and Gordon Strachan.

The group is also organising a lunch for Montrose FC at the Apex Hotel in Dundee on June 29 with former Rangers and Liverpool manager Graeme Souness as guest speaker.

Tickets for the Queen’s Hotel event are £20 and can be purchased by calling 07739 002722 or guests can pay on arrival.
