Glamis Extravaganza organisers are racing towards a bumper weekend with the prospect of Scotland’s largest vintage vehicle gathering basking in the continuing summer heatwave.
With more than 1,600 vehicles of all kinds and ages already guaranteeing the 44th Scottish Transport Extravaganza will be the biggest field ever, Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club volunteers hope their hard work will also be rewarded with a huge visitor influx.
The organisers have frequently been left sweating over the weather prospects in the lead-up to past events but the extended dry spell means the only perspiration has been on the brow of the team preparing the show field in the sun-kissed grounds of Glamis Castle for this weekend’s two-day spectacle.
SVVC administrator Lesley Munro said: “Planning for the next Extravaganza starts as soon as the previous one finishes, but the one thing we can never be sure about is the weather we are going to get.
“The conditions have been great to get the field prepared and with the forecast looking good, we’re really hoping for a fantastic weekend.
“Once again the support from all over the country has been incredible – every year it just seems to get better, but with more than 1,600 entries it is the biggest Extravaganza ever,” she added.
The array includes a line-up of 57 car clubs, including many regulars such as Tayside MG enthusiasts who will be bringing almost 100 vehicles to their stand for visitors to admire.
Main ring attractions include a first time visit of the Inch Perfect Trials display team whose performance will include massive jumps up vertical walls, freestyle tricks and other spectacular stunts.
Angus Crafters Association and Forfar and District Pipe Band are also lined up for visitors.
Lesley added: “We’ve people coming over from Ireland with vehicles and as stall holders, as well as many regulars and newcomers from down south.
“The north of Scotland is also an area that is very well represented this year, which is something that is increasing and we’re very happy about that.”
“The team has been working tirelessly on the field and it is looking the best it ever has – it’s like a bowling green in some places.”
Early arrivals are already in Angus ahead of the gates officially opening on Saturday –around the same time as a field of around 70 vehicles will set off on the traditional round-Angus regularity run.
“The run is always a very popular part of the Extravaganza – the route is kept top secret up until the start – and it involves a great selection of vehicles, including motorcycles, commercials and cars of all ages,” added Lesley.
