Part of Arbroath beach near the West Links playpark was cordoned off after the discovery of suspected ordnance.
Coastguard crews attended the scene shortly before 1pm.
They consulted bomb disposal personnel and it was confirmed the item was a fire extinguisher.
One eye-witness explained the device was discovered on the beach near West Links Park, beside Jumping Joeys and the cinema.
He said: “Two coastguard vehicles attended and three coastguard workers cordoned off most of the area and were telling people to move back.”
