Two workmates from Carnoustie are planning to cycle round all 80 sculptures on the Maggie’s Penguin Parade in a bid to raise funds for the cancer charity.
It will take Michelin employees Sam Holmes, 35, and Steven Esposito, 39, a full day to pedal the 100-mile journey, taking in penguins across Dundee, Perth, Fife and Angus.
The super-fit duo will start the route in Perth at the “South Pole Position” penguin on August 24.
They hope colleagues from Michelin will join them at various points as they check off penguins in Dundee, Newport, St Andrews, Broughty Ferry, Monifieth, Carnoustie and Kirriemuir before completing the route in Brechin.
Machine operator Sam said: “I’m really excited about seeing all the penguins and raising money for Maggie’s.
“I’ve never covered as many miles in a day on a bike as we will on this route, so it will be a big challenge for us.”
Steven, a maintenance engineer, added: “We are looking forward to the event and raising as much money as we can for a great cause.
“We hope other colleagues might join us on the trip along the way to cheer us on, too!”
Michelin has sponsored one of the penguin sculptures and Sam and Steven will visit “4 Seasons in One Day” outside St Paul’s Cathedral in Dundee as part of their route.
Maggie’s has been chosen as the company’s charity of the year and various activities will take place to support the cause alongside the Penguin Parade.
Ahead of the cycle challenge, Maggie’s Dundee Centre Fundraising Manager Annie Long thanked the duo for their “tremendous effort”.
She added: “Maggie’s Dundee relies entirely on charitable donations and the money raised by initiatives like Sam and Steven’s to find the £540,000 per year it takes to run our centre. We will show them a warm welcome as they go round.”
Last year Sam and Steven cycled more than 750 miles over 12 days from Dundee to Clermont-Ferrand in France and raised more than £7,000 for charity Mary’s Meals.
