A woman who moved into her Monifieth home on Friday morning discovered a hand grenade – after just half an hour in her new property.
Noreen Jordan had only just had the keys handed to her for her new Airlie Drive home when a joiner, who had been checking the attic space, came down with the unexplained ordinance.
The retired teacher, who moved up from the English city of Coventry with her husband who has set up a new carpet cleaning business, said the situation was “quite surreal”.
“We got the keys this morning, and a joiner who was with us came down with this old grenade.
“It felt quite heavy and quite real, so I decided to call the police on 101.
“The past couple of days, my husband and I have been staying in a mobile home in Broughty Ferry while the finishing touches were being put on the house.
“Our son called earlier in the week concerned about the weather, what with Storm Ali battering down earlier this week.
He asked us if, jokingly, if we were safe moving up to Monifieth for the quiet life.
“The grenade still had a pin in and is sitting on my kitchen table.
“I’m hopeful we’ll get to spend our first night in our new home tonight. “This has certainly been a way to meet the neighbours.”
A 100m cordon was put in place around the Airlie Drive property. The ordinance disposal unit arrived on scene shortly before 5.30pm.
The intricate network of suburban footways, cul-de-sacs and crescents provided a headache for some trying to reach their homes, even those outside the cordon.
Tayside Police Division said: “We are responding to reports of an ordnance device being found within a residential property in the Airlie Drive area of Monifieth this afternoon.
“Police were called at around 3:05pm.
“Part of Airlie Drive and part of Grangehill Drive are closed while we deal with the matter but diversions along other sections of the road are available.”
The force later updated: “Police Scotland can now confirm that the MOD (Ministry of Defence) have attended the incident in Airlie Drive in Monifieth and carried out an assessment of the object.
“There was no explosive properties to the object and it has now been removed. All roads are now open and we would like to thank members of the public for their patience.”
