“The investigation is at an early stage and is being carried out in conjunction with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.”
Investigators are expected to remain at the scene of the fire-ravaged ground floor flat throughout the weekend as they probe the exact cause of the blaze.
The identity of the victim has not been released but he has been named locally as Graham Stewart, who had lived in the house for a number of years.
Next door neighbour Katie Coutts was on her way home on Friday afternoon when she saw smoke pouring into the sky above River Street.
”I just ran down the hill with my dog, I thought it was my house,” said the 20-year-old.
”I couldn’t believe how bad it was and I saw them trying to give him CPR before we were all told to get back.
”Everyone knew him as Grimmy, he always spoke and he gave me Christmas decorations.
”He was never any bother to me so I was shocked to find out what had happened.”
