The first of what is hoped will be many pieces of public artwork to brighten up an Angus town has been unveiled.
The gable end of a prominent building at the east port in Forfar now features a giant poster depicting a photograph of a rural scene.
The colourful image taken by Ian Bain of Forfar adorns the wall of the Thistle Bar on North Street after being judged the most eye-catching among entries received in a competition organised by Forfar Community Council.
They invited budding photographers to capture their favourite view of the town or surrounding areas for their innovative art venture, with a high resolution image printed on a four by three metre banner.
The photo of an Angus field basking in sunshine was erected by members of the Future Forfar Signage Group.
The stunning photograph was graphically imposed on the banner by Sign Industries and erected by Wayne Law.
Derek Cairns, an electrician, volunteered his help to clear the wall of old electrical work.
Group member Charlotte Douglas said: “Lots of excellent photographs were submitted.
“We had a difficult choice to make but we’re delighted Ian’s photo is now up there.
“The group is hopeful we might find other gable end sites in the town to brighten up, so the other photographs will be kept for possible future use.”
The Future Forfar Signage Group has been working behind the scene to make the town centre more appealing for local residents and visitors alike, complementing the good work already being done by Forfar in Flower.
They have improved the signage round the town and cleared up the small seated area under the East and Old Church.
Forfar and district SNP councillor Lynne Devine, who has been involved with the project, said a number of photographs had been sent in for the competition.
She said: “Ian Bain’s picture was taken outside Forfar on the Forfar Path Network.
“I really like the colours, the sky is superb.
“There were quite a lot of photographs taken at Balmashanner and at the loch, some nice photos, so we might be able to use them in the future.
“We are hoping that, once we have done this once, we can do it again.”
