A popular Monifieth pub run by the family of £148 million Euromillions winner Gillian Bayford-Deans has closed without warning.

Twelve staff at The Crown Inn in Monifieth were told at 11am on Monday the pub had closed and was being put up for sale.

Shocked workers were told there is no prospect of the High Street pub re-opening until new owners are found.

The Crown is owned by David Tassie but its lease is held by a firm listed at Companies House as The Crown (Monifieth) Ltd.

The company’s four directors include Gillian Bayford-Deans’ parents Brenda and Ian McCulloch and brother Colin McCulloch.

They took over running the pub less than 18 months ago.

Accounts filed in September show between September 15 2017 and March 31 2018 the company made a loss of £26,676.

Julie Robb, 34, has worked behind the bar since she was 18 and was told she had been made redundant in a phone call on Monday morning.

She said: “There was no forewarning, It has come completely out of the blue.

“I got a phone call at 11 o’clock this morning to say the pub is shut and will not be re-opening.”

Julie added: “I’ve worked there for 16 years  and there have been several different managers in that time.

“It was a really busy, successful pub up until they took it over.

“We tried several times to step in and fix what was going wrong.

“They were running down the stock and we could see this was going to happen.”

Julie added she hopes a new buyer can be found for the pub soon.

She said: “It’s a good business and has a huge prospective for more business.

“If the right person steps in it will be a huge success.”

Colin McCulloch has been approached for comment.

Mr Tassie said: “I was advised by my tenant this morning that he was closing the door immediately.”

He added that if the licence holders have been declared bankrupt then he will begin advertising for a new tenant as soon as possible.

Mrs Bayford-Deans won the £148 million Euromillions jackpot with her then husband Adrian in 2012.

The couple divided their fortune in half when they divorced.

Last year she married Brian Deans in August.
