A lorry driver was taken to Ninewells Hospital under police escort yesterday after his HGV jack-knifed on the A90 north of Brechin.

The driver, who is in his 40s, had to be cut from the cab of his vehicle by firefighters.

Emergency vehicles raced to the scene shortly before 10am as motorists faced the first real blast of winter weather to hit the north-east this year.

Major traffic diversions were put in place on the main route between Dundee to Aberdeen which cuts through Angus.

Southbound vehicles were diverted through Brechin, while the northbound carriageway was down to one lane.

Roads bosses said the lane closure would remain in place until Friday when a temporary barrier will be erected.

There was major traffic disruption following the incident which happened at about 9.45am.

Southbound traffic was brought to a near standstill as motorists came off the A90 and headed into Brechin past the golf club.

One delivery driver said: “Drivers were being diverted off the bypass into Brechin.

“The traffic was nose to tail with everything – cars, articulated lorries and vans – being diverted through the town and back onto the A90 near the Brechin Castle Garden Centre.

“It took me 25 minutes to get through Brechin.”

Firefighters, police and paramedics were called to the scene.

Four fire and rescue appliances were sent from stations in Brechin, Laurencekirk and Montrose.

A heavy rescue unit was also called from Dundee’s Macalpine Road.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: “We were there assisting. Ambulance requested us.

“We had a rescue unit there as one male driver was medically trapped.”

After being rescued from the vehicle the driver, who was reported to be suffering from back pain, was taken by ambulance to hospital.

No details of his condition have been released. His injuries are not understood to be life threatening.

BEAR Scotland crews were also at the scene to repair damage to the central reservation on Brechin bypass.

A spokesperson said: “An HGV jack-knifed on the southbound section of the A90 at Brechin this morning, damaging a section of the central reservation concrete barrier.

“We assisted Police Scotland with the closure of the A90 whilst the HGV was recovered and the road cleared of debris.

“For safety, single lane closures will remain in place until a temporary barrier can be installed tomorrow.

“Works to complete a permanent repair to the damaged section of barrier will be programmed as soon as designs have been finalised.”

The A90 reopened at about 11.50am.
