A new pitch named in honour of the late Angus Provost Helen Oswald is set to open in the summer.
Carnoustie Gala Committee will also be placing a bench in the much-loved politician’s name at Oswald Park before the start of the 2019/20 season.
Following a public vote, the community elected to name Carnoustie Panmure junior football club’’s new park after Mrs Oswald who died in 2016 following a battle with cancer.
The SNP councillor first represented the Sidlaw East constituency in 1999 and then in 2007 became one of three ward councillors for Carnoustie and District.
Carnoustie SNP councillor Mark McDonald said the tribute would leave a “lasting and fitting legacy” for someone who threw herself into the life of her adopted town.
He said: “Helen Oswald was a remarkable person who represented Carnoustie with care, diligence and best of all worked for everybody in the town.
“She was a provost that Angus could be proud of and knew just what to say and when, sometimes serious often humorous.”
Mr McDonald said gnerations of Carnoustie’s young people had benefited from her work as a councillor.
She was instrumental in the creation of the town’s skate park and many will now start their footballing careers at Oswald Park.
“Helen worked hard for the people of Carnoustie and was a fantastic provost of Angus,” he said.
“This tribute to her memory leaves a lasting and fitting legacy for someone much loved by old and young alike in the community.”
Carnoustie Panmure met with Angus Council representatives to inspect and review the situation regarding the new pitches on David Moyes Road in Carnoustie.
Both parties have agreed that the turf has developed well enough that the club can now plan to open the park in the summer ready for the start of the 2019/20 season.
Chairman Philip Hope said: “We would again like to thank everyone involved with the project — Bill Bowles who identified the option for the community to buy the plot and worked with the club to develop the plans, the late Provost Helen Oswald who worked tirelessly in the background to support us, Angus Council, SFA East Region Club Development Team, sportscotland and of course club officials, past and present for their hard work.”
The new park will consist of two 11-a-side pitches of two sizes which will benefit the different age groups that will play there.
The club also intends to purchase two pairs of weighted wheeled goals using a grant from Co-op Carnoustie, and to continue plans for toilet and changing facilities in association with the SFA East Region and the Scottish Football Partnership Trust.
