Arbroath FC have given club stalwart Neil Douglas a lift in his fightback from the devastating stroke he suffered two months ago.

Popular Neil was working in his regular volunteer videographer role at Gayfield when he fell ill during a March home game against East Fife.

Matchday photographer Graham Black captured the triumphant scenes for a framed picture which was given to Neil

Since then, the 47-year-old has shown great determination in his recovery, and the surprise appearance of the League One championship trophy proved another tonic to aid that journey.

Neil’s stroke happened as Dick Campbell’s men were in the final stages of their title season and he was desperate to get his hands on the cup when club captain Mark Whatley and Gayfield operations and kit manager dropped in to Dundee’s Royal Victoria Hospital where his recovery is continuing.

Neil with the John Christison Trophy

His wife, Natasha, had told Neil the pair were due to visit, but the accompanying trophy was a bonus.

He also received a framed photograph of the Lichties after they clinched the league at Angus neighbours Brechin’s Glebe Park, as well as the John Christison Community Services Trophy awarded to him for volunteering his time and services to the club and community.

A fundraising page to assist Neil in his recovery has been set up at www.gofundme.com/f/neil-douglas
