‘I would like to stress that we are treating this incident as isolated and I would like to thank residents in the local community for their patience whilst we progress with this investigation.’

Friends have paid tribute to Ms Smith describing her as a “loving, caring girl” and “one of a kind.”

They have placed more than 16 bunches of flowers by the shared entrance to the property where she died.

One read: “You will be missed so much. You didn’t deserve this. Such a loving, caring girl. Have a heart [sic] for everyone. I’ll never forget you.”

A second described her as “truly one of a kind.”

“You and your presence will be sorely missed. All our love,” the friend added.

A final note read: “You will forever be in my heart. Not only were you my bff (best female friend). You were a big sister. I will cherish every single memory we made. Rest in peace beautiful. I love you always.”

Police had lifted the cordon blocking Swan Street between City Road and High Street by 9am on Monday, June 10.

The previous day’s large police presence had been scaled back to a solitary officer and small cordon blocking the shared entrance to the property, which is less than five minutes’ walk from Brechin Cathedral.

Police investigators, some wearing facemasks, were seen entering and leaving the four-storey building, which has shops on street level and accommodation above.
