A breast cancer survivor who lost her big sister to the disease two months ago will complete a skydive to mark what would have been her sibling’s 50th birthday.
Brechin woman Fiona Campbell, 47, will complete a tandem freefall skydive at Errol on Sunday. She is raising funds for Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Dundee following her sister Lisa’s death and her family’s “terrible years” with breast cancer.
Fiona lost her sister Lisa Dallas to the disease on May 22. The lawyer with Angus council died seven weeks before what would have been her 50th birthday on July 11.
Her own “gruelling regime” of treatment only ended in March. Her mother, Yvonne Dallas, received the all clear in 2017 after being diagnosed with the same disease.
Fiona said: “I was diagnosed in July last year with an aggressive form of breast cancer, just over a year after my sister Lisa was diagnosed with the same disease.
“A few years previous to this, my mother Yvonne was also diagnosed.
“All three of us went through our own gruelling regime of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy but unfortunately for Lisa, the treatment was not successful and secondary cancer was diagnosed just a year after her treatment finished.”
Fiona said her sister’s goal was to see her 50th birthday.
“Sadly, she lost her battle weeks before the milestone. I wanted make the jump to coincide with Lisa’s 50th, which will also be exactly one year since I was diagnosed.
“She took great pride in everything she did. We have received lots of words from work colleagues saying what a positive person she was to be around. She was also known for her colourful, flamboyant style of dress.”
Fiona had an initial fund raising target of £600, but has already received around £2,000 in pledges.
“I just wanted to do something really big. I’ve done nothing like it before. It’s very scary but I have to take the attitude I’ve been through this gruelling treatment and I can do anything now.
“Maggie’s Dundee has been a great help to me, mum and Lisa throughout our treatment, and now moving forward for myself.”
