The busiest road through the Mearns was closed in both direction due to nails on the surface on Wednesday morning.
The A90 Dundee to Aberdeen dual carriageway was shut at the roundabout with the new Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR), just north of Stonehaven, to allow for a clear-up.
The route was closed off at about 8.30am until 9.25am.
One motorist told the Evening Express that there were “thousands” of nails on the route.
Gavin Park said: “I stopped to pick up a smashed toilet on the opposite side of the road and found thousands of nails all over both lanes.”

A tweet from the organisation added: “A90 both ways is closed at the roundabout for the AWPR due to nails on the road to allow a clear up. This also affects the B979 heading into Stonehaven.”
West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine Conservative MP Andrew Bowie said: “This awful mess has no doubt caused chaos for thousands of motorists.
“It’s fortunate that the incident has been reported quickly. It could have caused a terrible accident.”
