The bomb squad was called out to an Angus recycling centre on Tuesday afternoon.
The device was discovered in a skip at the Angus Council Recycling Centre on Queenswell Road in Forfar around 2pm.
A 50-metre cordon was set up around the site.
Homes and businesses in the area were evacuated while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team attended the incident.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We were called to a report of a suspicious package at Angus Recycling Centre on Queenswell Road in Forfar around 2pm on Tuesday, October 15.
“A 50 metre cordon was put in place and people evacuated from neighbouring buildings and local businesses close.
“The Explosive Ordnance Team will attend to check the item and make it safe on Wednesday.”
