A young serial offender has been given a final chance to redeem himself after causing road chaos for more than three years in Dundee.
Calum Miller drove carelessly and at excessive speed on Reres Road and Panmure Terrace, failed to give way at a junction, crashed into a car causing it to collide with a lamp post and crashed into a fence in Abertay Street.
Dundee Sheriff Court heard the 20-year-old had no licence, insurance or MOT and failed to stop at the scene of the crash.
He went on to drive without a licence or insurance on another occasion at Craigmount Road, and was stopped by police for a third time on Emmock Road when they suspected he was driving under the influence of a substance.
Miller refused to have a drug test and attempted to pervert the course of justice by giving officers a false name, address and date of birth. He was on three bail orders at the time.
On various occasions he assaulted police officers by spitting, punching one of them in the face and pushing him on the body. He also committed a breach of the peace by shouting and swearing.
Miller stole alcohol from Asda in Myrekirk Road while he was on bail, and was found in possession of a crowbar at the supermarket.
The offences were committed between July 27 2016, when he was just 17, and October 28 2019.
The court heard Miller, of Strathcarron Place, has already spent three months in Polmont young offenders’ institution.
He had been kicked out of his mother’s house due to his behaviour, the sheriff was told, but she was now supporting him to get back on the right path.
His crimes were so numerous that Sheriff Derek Reekie ran out of sentencing options on Wednesday, deferring sentence on one of the offences until January 15.
He ordered Miller to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work, to stay at home between 7pm and 7am for six months, to undergo social work supervision for 18 months and disqualified him from obtaining a driving licence for 12 months.
Sheriff Reekie said: “Driving without a licence was a favourite pastime of yours.
“You demonstrated a total disregard for authority.
“This is your last chance.
“If you slip up and I don’t see an exemplary report you will go to jail for a substantial period.
“You’re not a child any more.”
