A Dundee man who assaulted casino staff and a police officer in a New Years Day outburst has had sentence deferred to be of good behaviour.

John Scott, 22, of Mossgiel Place, appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court, having previously pled guilty to a series of incidents outside the Grosvenor Casino on West Marketgait.

Sheriff Rafferty warned Scott he will be looking at a “substantial sentence” if he breaches bail conditions.

On January 1, Scott pulled a casino employee to the ground and repeatedly spat on his head.

He then carried out the same attack on another casino staff member.

Scott also assaulted a police officer on the same evening, by pushing her body, striking her on the head and knocking her to the ground.

Defence solicitor David Duncan told the court his client had not been taking his medication for a mental health condition.

Due to his previously good record, Sheriff Rafferty opted to defer Scott’s sentence to allow him to seek appropriate therapy for his condition.

He told Scott: “If your reports are not favourable you will receive a substantial custodial sentence.

“Your conduct was so appalling that some may say you should be given a custodial sentence now but I will defer it for four months on the condition that you are of good behaviour.”

Scott was ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work for a separate charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting, swearing and making offensive comments during the same incident.

In addition to the deferred sentence, Scott was also ordered to stay away from Grosvenor Casino on West Marketgait and not to contact Alexander Carr and Andrew Will.
