A prisoner who was caught with a makeshift weapon in his cell at Perth Prison was jailed for a year yesterday.
Jamie Muir, 27, was caught hiding two razor blades melted into the end of a piece of prison-issue plastic cutlery inside the jail.
Muir, who is serving more than three years for a variety of other offences, had a further 12 months imposed at Dundee Sheriff Court.
Sheriff Lorna Drummond said: “You committed this offence quite a long time ago and since then you have been sentenced to a long period in jail. Your earliest release date is 13 June 2023.
“It is a serious matter having a weapon like that in prison.
“It does justify a significant period in custody.”
Depute fiscal Eilidh Robertson told the court that Muir had a long list of convictions for past offending including drugs, robbery and assault to the danger of life.
She said prison officers took Muir to his cell after another incident and when they asked if he had any weapons he told them he had the blade under his bed.
Muir, from Fife, admitted having the makeshift weapon inside Perth Prison on January 11 last year, while he was on bail.
