A 21-year-old man has been charged in connection with the rape of a 83-year-old woman in Glenrothes.
The man is due to appear at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court today, police said yesterday.
The development comes nearly three weeks after the pensioner was subjected to a serious sexual assault in her own home at Meldrum Court in the Collydean area of Glenrothes.
Locals were urged to keep all doors and windows locked in the wake of the attack which happened around 5am on June 25.
Detective Chief Inspector John Anderson of Fife CID called it a “horrendous crime ” and urged anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward.
A 36-year-old male was arrested 24 hours after the incident was reported but he was released without charge and eliminated from the officers’ inquires.
Specialist officers from across Scotland were brought in to help their Fife colleagues in the hunt and officers have stepped up patrols in the area in the weeks since.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland, said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the serious sexual assault of an 83-year-old woman in Glenrothes.”
The spokesperson added: “A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal and he is expected to appear at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on Wednesday, July 8.
