An inmate was left with the worst injuries a prison nurse had ever seen after being scalded with boiling water by his cellmate.
Stefan Kubina, 35, was left scarred for life after being attacked by James McDonagh inside Perth Prison.
Dundee Sheriff Court was told that Mr Kubina could be heard screaming and was left with 10% burns to his body.
McDonagh, 31, was jailed for 34 months after he admitted carrying out the attack on January 2.
He admitted pouring boiling water on his victim’s head and body, and restricting his breathing by placing him in a headlock, to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.
Depute fiscal Stewart Duncan said McDonagh had more than 20 previous convictions. He was serving eight months for dishonesty at the time of the attack.
Mr Duncan said the cell’s emergency alarm was activated during the incident.
A charge nurse who attended told police: “It was quite horrific. I had not seen anything as bad as that in my whole career.”
McDonagh’s solicitor told the court he had shared cells with other prisoners without incident, but had fallen out with Mr Kubina.
They had both asked to be moved apart and the prison authorities had agreed, but the planned change had been scrapped shortly before the incident.
