A knife-wielding robber serving a 12-year prison sentence has received a further 16-month jail term after being caught with a mobile up his rectum.
James Frail, 36, a prisoner in Edinburgh Prison, was caught with the phone in his cell just a month before he was due to be released.
Frail had been jailed in 2008 after bringing terror to the streets of Edinburgh during a one-man crimewave across 11 days.
During the string of robberies he slashed and stabbed a bookmaker’s employee who tried to tackle him.
Prison officers had visited Frail in his Perth Prison cell after it was suspected he was in possession of the mobile.
Depute fiscal Susan Ruta said: “Upon seeing the police officers the accused made a dash to the toilet.
“He was seen sitting on the toilet and it was suspected he was trying to get rid of a mobile phone from his rectum.”
After prison officers pulled him away from the toilet they saw a mobile phone ready to be flushed.
Solicitor Cameron Tait said his client had been trying to contact his partner because they were having trouble in their relationship.
Frail pled guilty to having the phone, SIM card and wires in his cell on February 2.
Sheriff Wood told him: “Because you are a long term prisoner you shouldn’t feel you are in some way immune from your actions.”
