A man who stood in the middle of Dundee High Street shouting “all Dundonians are idiots” has been jailed.
Mark Allan carried out a bizarre string of crimes over a period of 18 months.
In one incident he stood in Dundee city centre claiming to be a “proud” former member of the BNP before shouting anti-English abuse at passers by and police.
Allan then yelled “all Dundonians are idiots”, before threatening officers with violence and being arrested.
On another occasion Allan was thrown off a bus for being drunk before immediately picking a fight with a dog walker on the street and throwing punches at him before the dog walker turned the tables and pinned him to the ground.
In May this year cops were called out to a street in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, where Allan was kicking wing mirrors off cars.
Police surrounded him, with Allan shouting sectarian abuse at one officer.
That then prompted Allan to lash out at a passing cyclist.
George Angus was riding past when Allan kicked out at the bike, sending Mr Angus flying into a nearby parked car.
Fiscal depute Susan Ruta told Dundee Sheriff Court: “In another incident the accused tried to gain entry to a bar but was refused.
“He became aggressive and starting shouting.
“He was traced in a nearby street where he became aggressive.
A sheriff told Allan: “If you perceive yourself as some sort of Scottish patriot then you let Scotland down, it is nothing to be proud of.”
Allan, 45, of Nursery Road, Dundee, pleaded guilty on summary complaint to behaving in a threatening and abusive manner in North Lindsay Street and Reform Street, Dundee, on April 19 2014.
He further admitted charges of breach of the peace and threatening and abusive behaviour committed on November 13 2014 in High Street, Dundee.
He further admitted behaving in a threatening and abusive manner at his home on November 26 2014 and a charge of assault committed on September 8 2015 in Craigie Avenue, Dundee.
Allan also admitted a charge of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner on January 9 this year in King Street, Broughty Ferry, and charges of vandalism, threatening and abusive behaviour and assault committed on May 22 this year in Nursery Road, Dundee.
Solicitor advocate Jim Laverty, defending, said: “His partner died in 2013 and he sought solace in alcohol.
“There are quite clearly a number of unresolved issues with him coming to terms with that.
“He is remorseful and is someone who when sober has insight in relation to the link between drink and what he does.”
Sheriff Alastair Brown jailed Allan for a total of 14 months.
He said: “You could have caused serious injury to the cyclist – you exercised no control.
“There are two strands to your behaviour, threatening violence and actually being violent, and racism.”
