A Spanish visitor who came to Angus to cheer on a friend in The Open at Carnoustie spent the entire tournament in police cells and has been hit with a £17,000 bill.
Alberto Garcia, who was in Scotland to cheer on Jon Rahm – a star of this weekend’s European Ryder Cup team – drove on the wrong side of the B962 near Monifieth and crashed into an oncoming minibus, Forfar Sheriff Court heard.
Garcia, 47, initially paid a roadside fine following the crash on July 19 but was later arrested on a dangerous driving charge and kept in custody for five days, after a passenger was left seriously injured. He admitted a lesser charge of driving carelessly.
Defence solicitor Billy Rennie said: “He has suffered a lot of emotional trauma as a result of this.
“He is also strangely facing a bill for £17,000 from the car hire company despite having insurance.” He was fined £300 and given four penalty points.
