Just weeks after charities voiced concerns about the number of people being convicted of child porn offences but then spared jail, one such individual has decided to appeal against a sheriff’s decision to order him to do unpaid work in the community rather than send him to prison.
Fraser Waddell, 21, admitted downloading a haul of vile child abuse images at the Leuchars military base in May 2016.
He also threatened to kill a police officer and has a previous conviction for pretending to be a policeman.
But he now seems to believe he was punished too harshly when a community payback order was imposed on him for his sickening offences.
Either that or he plans to challenge the supervision order he was placed under, or the restrictions put on his use of the internet.
Legally, of course, he is at liberty to appeal against both his sentence and conviction if he is inclined.
But, bearing in mind a sheriff told him that all of the images he viewed represented the “real abuse of a real child”, it is staggering that he is at liberty at all.
