A Fife drink-driver drank downed eight cans of lager before driving her Mercedes A-Class on the notorious Standing Stane Road.
Donna Murdoch burst two tyres as she made her way along 100 yards of verge on the dangerous A915 between Kirkcaldy and Leven.
At Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court, Murdoch admitted driving with 86 microgrammes of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system on August 28 – almost four times the legal limit.
Depute fiscal Mat Piskorz said: “At around 10.15pm, one of the witnesses driving on the road observed a silver Mercedes A-Class being driven by the accused in front.
“The accused was seen swerving on the road, crossing the central white line and mounting the grass verge.
“The accused was seen at one point driving along the grass verge for 100 yards.”
Stopped and waited for police
The motorist driving behind Murdoch began flashing their lights in an attempt to stop her.
The 40-year-old, of Myreside Avenue in Kennoway, did stop and remained stationary until police arrived.
Murdoch, a housekeeper at Victoria Hospital, freely stated to police officers she had been been drinking and should not have been driving.
“The accused openly stated she had drunk eight cans of lager and had burst both her nearside tyres as a result of hitting the kerb,” Mr Piskorz said.
She told police she was travelling to Falkirk to her mother’s house.
Accident warning from sheriff
Defence solicitor David Ritchie explained Murdoch had sold her car shortly afterwards.
He added she had left her home after an argument with her husband and “was not thinking straight.”
He said: “She has been very anxious about today’s hearing.
“She knows she’s put herself in a difficult position.
“She had been consuming alcohol throughout the day.
“It is a serious offence.”
Sheriff Eric Brown banned Murdoch from driving for 16 months.
He noted if she had struck a vehicle or person in her drunken state, there would have been a “real prospect” of imprisonment.
Also fining the first offender £600, the sheriff said: “Hopefully you will not appear again.”
Standing Stane Road is a known accident blackspot that has been at the centre of plans to reduce collisions.
