Child rapist jailed for police chase across Dundee

Calum Rae sped through the Claypotts junction, pursued by police

A convicted child rapist reached speeds of 93mph before smashing into a police car during a wild chase across Dundee.

Uninsured Calum Rae drove through red lights and went the wrong way around a roundabout before colliding into a police car.

In September 2020, Rae was sentenced to 27 months in prison for having unprotected sex with a 12-year-old.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard how Rae fled from a house in Dundee wearing only socks before telling police the girl lied about her age.

Rae, 22, is now banned from the roads for 30 months after pleading guilty to dangerous driving.

Accused races off at double speed limit

Dundee Sheriff Court heard police spotted Rae weaving in and out of lanes on the A92 between Arbroath and Dundee in June last year, three months before he was jailed for the rape.

Blue lights were activated but Rae’s car accelerated harshly, undertook another vehicle and hit a speed of 82mph in a 40mph zone.

Fiscal depute Duncan MacKenzie said: “A witness was travelling on Balgillo Road East to Baldovie Road where traffic conditions were heavier.

“The accused began to weave between lanes and, at one point, collided with the witness’ vehicle.

“The accused made no attempt to stop and continued to the Claypotts junction at speed.”

Mr MacKenzie added: “There was damage to the front nearside of the vehicle as a result.

“The accused approached and turned right to Baldovie Road and the speed was recorded as 90mph.

“The accused then drove on Drumgeith Road, a 30mph limit, at a speed of around 65mph.”

Chase across Dundee

Rae repeatedly swerved into the path of oncoming traffic at high speed with the pursuing officers believing this was in the hope that police would abandon the chase.

His speed continued up to 87mph on Drumgeith Road before sharply turning onto Whitfield Drive on the wrong side of the road.

Rae drove the wrong way around a mini-roundabout and almost collided with a cyclist.

Further police units joined the chase along Longhaugh Road, Pitkerro Road, Happyhillock Road and Fountainbleau Drive.

Officers recorded Rae driving at 75mph on Fountainbleau Drive, a 30mph zone.

Rae blitzed through a red light on Fintry Road, passing Morrisons, before driving through red lights on the A90.

Jumped from moving car

Police managed to get close to Rae but he jumped from the car while it was still in motion.

Rae’s car struck the rear of the police vehicle causing damage.

The lout managed to escape from police but one of Rae’s passengers identified him as the driver.

Rae, a prisoner of HMPYOI Polmont, pled guilty to driving dangerously, failing to stop for police and driving without insurance on June 3 last year.

Sheriff Alastair Carmichael said: “This was a truly appalling piece of driving which went on for a prolonged period of time.”

He jailed Rae for nine months and disqualified him from driving for 30 months.
