A teenager being CS-sprayed by police turned the tables by grabbing the canister and spraying it on an officer, Perth Sheriff Court heard.
Depute Fiscal Stuart Richardson described how things had “got out of hand” during a disturbance at a house in Perth and said this led to police being called.
“The accused ended up struggling with officers and he was asked to calm down,” he said.
“This didn’t work so CS spray was discharged into his face. However, the accused managed to get hold of the canister and managed to spray it into the face of an officer.”
The court heard a request was then made for police reinforcements to go to the house to end the disturbance.
Solicitor Pauline Cullerton, appearing for Thomson, said the police officer later had his eye “bathed” during medical assistance, but added that the officer didn’t suffer a serious injury.
“Things had got out of hand at the house,” she said.
“My client had CS spray discharged in his face and told me he was holding his hand out to protect his face when he managed to get hold of the canister.”
Liam Thomson, 19, of Gray Street, Perth, admitted that on June 26 at Gray Street he struggled violently with two police constables and assaulted one officer by punching him on the body and discharging CS spray into his face.
His co-accused, Kayleigh Coyle, 18, of the same address, admitted that on the same date and address she shouted, swore, acted in an aggressive manner and struggled violently with an officer.
Thomson was fined £400, while Coyle had sentence deferred until January 11 to be of good behaviour.
Sheriff Michael Fletcher asked Coyle to prove to him that this incident was purely a “one-off.”
