A dangerous driver who ploughed into a footbridge while being pursued by police in Dundee has been banned from the road.
Uninsured Brandon Williams failed to stop for officers who flagged him down on June 20 in 2020.
The 21-year-old was pursued by police and drove at excessive speeds for the road conditions along Drumgeith Road, near Drumgeith Park, in Dundee.
He overtook a vehicle, causing it to take evasive action in order to avoid a collision.
Eventually, Williams, of Helmsdale Place, mounted a verge and footpath, before crashing his vehicle into the footbridge.
Both the bridge and Williams’ vehicle were damaged as a result of the crash.
Banned for nearly four years
Williams previously admitted driving dangerously, without insurance and failing to stop for police.
He appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court to be sentenced.
Sheriff John Rafferty disqualified him for three years for driving dangerously and for 10 months for driving without insurance.
He also ordered Williams to complete 162 hours of unpaid work.
The sheriff said it was clear a previous period of imprisonment had had an effect on Williams.
Paralysed in later crash
Three months after the incident, Williams was injured in a motorbike crash near Camperdown Park.
His friends and family launched a crowdfunding page to raise money for an electric wheelchair until he could walk again.
Doctors said he would effectively have to learn to walk again from scratch.
Lennon Campbell, a friend of Brandon’s who was with him when the car crashed, said: “I was about 100 yards or so behind him when we crashed.
“I got frightened because I didn’t know what was going to happen but then I saw my pal go flying in the air.
“After that a lot of people came out of their houses, someone called an ambulance.
“I sat next to him and waited for it, he kept slipping in and out of consciousness and I thought he was going to die.
“It was really traumatic.”
