Fife motorist Anthony Burgess was spared the Ludovico Technique after being caught driving while uninsured.
The 66-year-old was pulled over by police on Glenrothes’s Golf Course Road on August 28 last year due to the manner of his driving and his car was seized.
Burgess, of Keith Court, Glenrothes, was not present at Kirkcaldy Justice of the Peace Court when his guilty plea by letter was accepted.
Justice of the Peace David Davidson decided the offence was not enough of a horror show to merit the punishments found in Burgess’ namesake’s iconic novel A Clockwork Orange, and fined him £335.
Burgess, who had a clean licence, was also furnished with six penalty points.
Prison ‘brawl’ trial
Eight men will stand trial next year accused of a “large scale stand-up fight” at Perth Prison.
Prosecutors have been struggling to set a date for the hearing, with few courts in Scotland big enough to accommodate all the accused.
The case called at Perth Sheriff Court, with only one man, Dylan Ferguson, in the dock.
Fiscal depute Alistair McDermid confirmed a trial had been scheduled for January 9 at Falkirk Sheriff Court.
A pre-trial hearing will be held in December “to confirm logistical arrangements”.
The alleged brawl is said to have taken place inside the jail on July 2019.
Lawyers for the accused men have each tendered pleas of not guilty.
It is alleged that on July 23, 2019, the eight men conducted themselves in a disorderly manner, engaged in a large scale stand-up fight and committed a breach of the peace.
The accused are John Brand, 29, of River Street, Brechin; Dylan Ferguson, 25, of HMP Low Moss; Terry Barr, 32, of St Ninian Terrace, Dundee; Scott Dolan, 33, of Glenmoy Avenue, Dundee; Richard Gibson, 36, of Linfield Street, Dundee; Graham Soave, 33, of Dundee Loan, Forfar; Pavel Tomko, 25, of Northwood Crescent, Nottingham and Daniel Blake, 43, of Hepburn Street, Dundee.
Caravan menace
A repeat sex offender Arbroath pensioner who tried to lure a six-year-old girl to his holiday caravan has been told to prove he is fit enough to avoid prison. James Hutchison recently underwent major heart surgery and a sheriff has given him six months to show he can carry out unpaid work as an alternative to jail time.
Spat and bit
A Fife thug who ranted at his mother, urinated in a police van and then bit and spat at a constable has been sentenced.
Michael Duncan of Keith Drive in Glenrothes was placed a restriction of liberty order and instructed to complete unpaid work.
On September 9 last year, Duncan behaved in a manner likely to cause fear or alarm at a property in Scotstarvit Place in Glenrothes.
The 22-year-old shouted and swore at his mother and threw household items around.
While in a police vehicle travelling to Victoria Hospital, he threatened to spit at police, repeatedly uttered homophobic remarks at officers and threatened to urinate in the police vehicle, before doing so.
Duncan also repeatedly threatened police with violence and repeatedly spat.
He assaulted PC Liam Rolland by spitting at him and biting his hand.
At Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court, Sheriff Elizabeth McFarlane ordered him to complete 250 hours of unpaid work and placed him on a 7pm to 7am curfew for three months.
Winger’s wings clipped
Dundee FC star Declan McDaid was fined and given penalty points after speeding in Glasgow and hitting a set of traffic lights. McDaid, 26, pled guilty to careless driving.
Fast food foolishness
A 32-year-old man has admitted causing a disturbance at McDonald’s in Perth.
Ray Stevenson acted in an abusive manner towards staff member Jakub Holos.
He repeatedly shouted, swore and threatened him with violence.
Stevenson, of Nimmo Avenue, Perth, appeared at the city’s sheriff court and admitted the offence at the Dunkeld Road branch on October 5, last year.
He further admitted that on the same day, he behaved in a similar way to retail worker Jamie McDonald at the neighbouring Asda supermarket.
Sheriff Craig McSherry deferred sentence until next month for “a full range of reports” including a Restriction of Liberty Order assessment.
Prison drugs
20-year-old man Jack Boyd has been locked up after thousands of pounds worth of drugs were thrown over the walls of Perth Prison. Staff intercepted packages of heroin, cannabis and street valium thrown into the grounds of the maximum security jail. Although Boyd’s DNA was on them all, it is unclear if he actually threw them.
Knuckleduster
A teenager was caught with a knuckleduster in Dunfermline.
Brandon Maclennan, 18, admitted having the offensive weapon at a property in Fodbank View, Touch, on December 9 last year.
Maclennan, of the city’s Blake Street, pled guilty to the charge via defence lawyer Heather Morrison at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.
Sheriff David Hall adjourned sentencing until June 15 for the production of background reports.
