An armed Montrose labourer who took another person’s car for a joyride has been jailed for more than a year.
Raymond Henderson appeared from prison by video link to be sentenced at Dundee Sheriff Court.
The 43-year-old had admitted possessing a knife outside his home in Coronation Way on February 7 last year.
He also admitted taking a car from the street without the permission of the owner and failing to provide a blood sample for police when they brought him into West Bell Street station.
His solicitor Billy Rennie said: “He has been in employment in recent months, working in construction labouring.
“He does have a record, including a record for possession of a weapon in 2018.
“He has no outstanding matters which is a little bit unusual for him.”
Sheriff Paul Brown jailed him for 13 months, seized the knife, and disqualified him for three and a half years.
Double drink-drive nurse
Fife nurse Debbie Greig was given a direct alternative to imprisonment when she was convicted of drink-driving twice. On one occasion, she was six times the limit when she drove a child to a football match in Rosyth and then caused a touchline disturbance.
Shoogly chair
A Dundee man will come home from prison to a shaky seat after The Crown seized a chair leg with which he armed himself.
William Murray appeared from custody at Dundee Sheriff Court to admit possessing the offensive weapon.
The 49-year-old was spotted outside his home in Provost Road by neighbours on January 17 last year.
They became concerned about him wielding the chair leg and phoned police.
Sheriff David Hall said: “You’ve a bad record” and jailed Murray for five months.
He ordered forfeiture of the chair leg.
Returned to prison
Sex offender Martin Reeves, who hid a 15-year-old girl under his bed when police arrived to look for her, has been returned to prison after breaching the terms of his early-release licence by shoplifting.
Bottle of wine
A Fife drink-driver told police he did not think he would be over the legal limit after drinking a bottle of wine earlier in the day.
Barry Robertson, 43, of Hillview Crescent, Crossgates, admitted driving a car on Broad Street, Cowdenbeath, while nearly twice the legal alcohol limit (42mics/100ml) on June 27 2020.
Procurator fiscal depute Lauren Pennycook said police stopped Robertson’s Peugeot at around 9:40pm and officers could smell alcohol on his breath.
The fiscal depute said: “Mr Robertson said he consumed a bottle of wine at around 4:30am on the same date and had no alcohol since.”
Defence lawyer Elaine Buist said Robertson fully accepts responsibility.
She said her client’ was in a local store when police came in a asked about his car because something was wrong with one of the lights.
Sheriff David Hall banned Robertson from driving for a year and ordered him to carry out 75 hours of unpaid work.
Iraq voyage
Hamza Baki was caught dangerous driving in the car he had just bought for a cross-continent trek to Iraq to see his Covid-stricken parents. Bake tailgated and undertook a car on the A92 near Glenrothes in the Skoda he had just collected from Stirling for the journey in May 2021.
‘Tough time’
A Dundee man was caught with a knife when police searched him, suspecting he was involved in a crash.
Officers rushed to Douglas Road at 9.30pm on August 22 2019 to attend an unrelated car crash.
Police had been looking for a suspected drug-driver who had fled the scene and saw Graham Kyle at a bus stop.
They believed Kyle, who was under the influence, matched the description of the driver and he was detained and searched.
He was found to have a fixed-handled kitchen knife in his jacket pocket.
The 54-year-old appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court yo admit possessing the blade without lawful authority.
His solicitor Ross Donnelly said his client was a resident at the Salvation Army Lighthouse at Burnside Mill, where residents are not provided with sharps.
He explained anyone who wants to use a knife to cook or prepare food must bring their own and Kyle had been given the knife by his son’s girlfriend.
Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown was shown the knife at Dundee Sheriff Court and furnished with a letter from the Salvation Army outlining their position.
The sheriff deferred sentencing until June 22 for reports.
She said: “It’s clear you’ve had quite a tough time.”
Last chance saloon
A Perth restaurant raider arrested by police who followed a trail of dropped coins, has been given one last chance to stay out of jail. Bungling thief Christopher Anderson was caught on CCTV smashing a till and stealing drink from Willows coffee shop.
Fife assault
A Fife man has admitted assaulting his partner and trying to prevent her calling police for help.
Jawad Abdulahi, of Main Street in Crossford, appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court this week to admit the offences.
The 54-year-old pled guilty to assaulting the woman by repeatedly pushing her on the body and causing her to fall onto a sofa, seizing her mobile phone from her hand and struggling with her, all to her injury, on March 15 this year.
He also admitted behaving in a threatening and abusive manner towards her on the same date by repeatedly shouting, uttering threats of violence and attempting to prevent her from calling the police for assistance.
Sheriff David Hall adjourned sentencing until June 15 for the production of background reports.
Abdulahi was released on bail.
