A Perth motorist who drove dangerously by reaching a speed of 70mph in a 20mph zone was told “custody is at the forefront” of a sheriff’s mind.
Perth Sheriff Court heard John Phillips, 26, of Huntingtower Road had been previously disqualified from driving for 10 years in 2015.
He drove at 70mph in a built-up area, sped through a red light and failed to negotiate a mini-roundabout.
Because of his previous ban, he was not insured for the Volkswagen Golf as he tore along Strathtay Road, Newhouse Road, Rannoch Road and Kingswell Road.
Solicitor David Holmes, defending, said his client had “stupidly” decided to take the car.
“His father had died in the summer and he has found it hard to deal with this,” he said.
Sheriff Gillian Wade told the court she had decided not to hear narration on the offences by the Crown as she would need background reports before sentencing Phillips. However, she warned Mr Holmes that custody is at the “forefront” of her mind.
And she told Phillips: “Due to the level of the road offences and the fact you already were disqualified from driving for 10 years in 2015, I need some background to this offence.”
Phillips pled guilty to a charge that on December 18 on various roads in Perth, he drove a car dangerously by driving at an excessive speed of 70mph in a built-up area and within a 20mph speed limit.
He also admitted on the same date and roads, he failed to negotiate a mini-roundabout, travelled through a red light and caused other motorists to take evasive action to avoid a collision.
Sheriff Wade deferred sentence until January 18, imposed an interim driving ban on Phillips and remanded him in custody.
