A 17-year-old Fife girl struck her former best friend over the head with a bottle of Buckfast at New Year.
The teenager, who is too young to be named, previously admitted hitting the girl on the head with a glass bottle, causing her to fall to the ground, at around 3am on January 1 last year, outside a property in Inverkeithing.
She appeared for sentencing this week at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.
The court heard the victim had been smoking a cigarette on a doorstep when the girl approached her from the street.
Procurator fiscal depute Lauren Pennycook said the girl struck the other teenager with the bottle.
Defence lawyer Stephen Morrison said the two girls had previously been best friends and had fallen out.
The solicitor said they met up and his client, who was 16 at the time, had no intention of getting into a physical altercation and the attack seemed to be “spontaneous”.
A neighbour attempted to separate the pair and then contacted police.
The victim suffered lumps on her head and the side of her face.
Sheriff Alison Michie said: “The consequences of such an assault can be devastating and can lead to permanent scarring or injury.
“It’s fortunate that has not occurred in this case and the injuries to your former best friend are limited.
“That’s fortunate for you and for her but your actions are extremely serious.”
Sheriff Michie fined the girl £270 and made a £200 compensation order.

Forfar Sheriff Court heard the 26-year-old gave the police the middle finger before pulling down his trousers.
Fiscal depute Stuart Hamilton said several members of the public were in the area at the time.
Laws ran off and was pursued by the constables.
He was caught in an alley way off Bonella Street, where he tried to escape by climbing a wall.
When Laws’ friends arrived, he shouted to them: “Just f***ing hit them, there’s only two of them.”
Laws, of Lethnot Green, struggled with the officers and assaulted one of them by striking him on the head with his arm.
Representing himself in the dock, Laws told Sheriff Robert More: “I was just drunk and being stupid. It’s no great, eh?”
The sheriff told Laws: “The most serious part of all this was when you were shouting to your pals.
“That must have been pretty scary for both of the officers.”
Laws was fined £300.
