Thursday court round-up — Homophobic abuse and no longer fit to drive

A 63-year-old man has admitted driving through Perth’s Oakbank neighbourhood while nearly four times the legal alcohol limit.

Martin Tolman was banned from the road when he appeared at the city’s sheriff court.

He pled guilty to driving a grey Vauxhall Meriva on Poplar Crescent, Fairies Road and other streets on Feburary 25, last year, with 80 mics of alcohol in his system. The legal limit is 22 mics.

Sheriff Gillian Wade told him: “I think I will need to defer this matter, given the high reading.”

Tolman, of Fairies Road, responded: “Can I just say to the court I am physically unable to drive.”

He will be sentenced on August 3.

Employee-from-hell

An employee-from-hell regularly pulled a loaded shotgun on his boss and tortured him with a dog chain during two decades of systematic violent abuse. Ronald McLennan, 52, from Charleston, Angus, has been locked up after a jury found him guilty of putting his employer’s life in danger during the 20-year bullying campaign. He will be sentenced next month.

Police abuse

Dundee man Andrew Ramsay, 42, admitted trying to headbutt a police officer and shouting homophobic abuse.

Ramsay, of Balgowan Avenue, pled guilty at Dundee Sheriff Court to acting in a threatening and abusive manner and attempting to assault PC Shogun Hongetsu in August last year.

Depute fiscal Lucy Scarborough told the court he had made threats and battered his head and legs against the back of a police van on the way to police HQ in Dundee on August 21 2021.

He continued to shout, swear and make threats in the custody suite and lunged towards PC Hongetsu and attempting to butt him on the head at the charge bar.

Defence solicitor Paul Parker Smith, in mitigation for Ramsay, said: “His position is there was another incident and he was aggrieved at being the one apprehended.

“He had been drinking, he accepts he overreacted very badly.

“He has been out of trouble for some time now. This was an isolated incident.”

Sheriff Gregor Murray imposed a £397 fine “with some hesitation.”

Assaulted wife

Alexander Edgar, 37, pled guilty to assaulting his wife on August 8 2020 at their home address on Nelson Street, Dundee.

He further admitted of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner toward a couple after entering their house uninvited, refusing to leave and acting in an aggressive manner on July 19 2020.

Sheriff Gregor Murray called for reports and deferred sentence until August 4.
