A hammer-wielding thug who left his victim severely injured has been sent to prison for 20 months.
Paul Hendrie broke his victim’s arm with a claw hammer during the attack.
Sheriff George Way said: “I am satisfied only a custodial sentence is appropriate to mark the severity of the offence.
“I understand the background but nonetheless weapons were brandished and the nature of the assault is clear it was a persistent attack.”
Hendrie, 41, from Dundee, admitted severely injuring Peter Hendrie – who is no relation – by striking him during a street robbery.
Hendrie was also made subject to a 12-month supervised release order at Dundee Sheriff Court after he admitted robbing his victim of £100 on October 16 last year.
Broke arm with hammer
Fiscal depute Kristina Kelly told the court Hendrie met the complainer in the street and asked him to hand over money he believed he was owed.
She said the victim handed over a piece of paper but no cash and Hendrie flew into a rage.
Witnesses saw him pulling a weapon from his waistband.
Peter Hendrie tried to run away but he tripped and fell.
When he looked up, Hendrie was standing over him with a claw hammer in his hand.
The fiscal said: “Hendrie struck him to the left side of his head and it started bleeding.
“The complainer raised his hand to protect himself and he was struck on the arm with a hammer.”
The victim had £100 stolen from his pocket and he was taken to hospital where he was found to have a broken arm, which needed repaired with pins and plates.
Hendrie, from Dundee, admitted brandishing a hammer in Carlochie Place, on September 4.
He admitted attacking and severely injuring Mr Hendrie in the city’s Liff Road on October 16 and having a weapon.
