Former soldier told Angus police to bring ‘armed cops’ to capture him

Nigel Dewar.

A retired soldier screamed ‘bring the armed response unit’ during a stand-off on Montrose beach-front.

Nigel Dewar, 56, had been at a memorial event with family earlier in the day and consumed alcohol.

He became irate after police officers took his daughter back to her mothers’ home after he told them he had “blacked out” due to drinking too much in June last year.

Depute fiscal Matthew Kerr told Forfar Sheriff Court: “At around 8.45pm on June 19, a member of the public called police after hearing shouting on Traill Drive.

“The accused was traced and found under the influence of alcohol.

“He told officers he and his daughter had attended a memorial event at a relatives’ house.

“Police escorted the accused and his daughter home.

“He told them he may have blacked out.

“Officers made arrangements for his daughter to stay at her mothers’.

“This upset the accused.

“At around 9.45pm, the accused started shouting at police.

“He said ‘you will need the firearms unit, I will take all of you bitches down’.

“His behaviour continued.”

‘Significant threats’

Sheriff Derek Reekie, sentencing him to unpaid work, said: “I take into account it was an emotional day for you and your background.

“However, the threats you made to the police were very significant indeed.

“They were trying to help you.

“You have no previous convictions since 2007.

“There is an alternative to custody, even though the threshold for a prison sentence has been met.”

Dewar, of Christies Lane, Montrose, will have to complete 110 hours unpaid work.

The former soldier admitted behaving in a manner likely to cause a reasonable person fear and alarm on June 19 2021, on Traill Drive, Montrose by shouting, swearing and uttering of threats of violence towards police.
