Former Paratrooper who raped women in Kirkcaldy faces extended prison term

A former paratrooper from Fife who raped three women within four years has been warned he faces an extended jail term.

Serial sex offender Alan Adsley, 40, trained as a boxer during 14 years in the Army and served four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The father of four, who was said to have used cocaine and steroids, made sick boasts about one of his victims, after drugging and raping her at her home in Dysart.

The woman, 48, said she woke to find herself naked from the waist down, with her clothes neatly folded on top of her shoes.

She realised she had been “violated” in her own bedroom after being given a drug.

His other victims – both of them mothers, aged now 44 and 32 – were also raped by Adsley in their homes in Kirkcaldy.

The 44-year-old was raped repeatedly.

On one occasion he turned up at her house and raped her while a friend – described by the prosecution as “a getaway driver” – waited for him in a car outside.

Brutalised during four-hour car journey

The 32-year-old rape victim said she woke to find Adsley taking intimate photographs.

When she challenged him, he “laughed it off”.

She later saw a video, on someone else’s phone, of him having sex with her.

On another occasion, Adsley, then a roofer, told her he had had Army training in “how to choke somebody out”.

He then attacked her, swinging her round by her hair, putting his hands round her throat and squeezing until she could not breathe.

She said: “I thought he was going to kill me.”

The woman also told how he had he jumped into her car in Blackpool as she tried to flee from him.

One victim had a terrifying journey from Blackpool to Kirkcaldy with the brute.

He went on to attack her repeatedly as she drove back to Fife.

For four hours through the night, as she struggled to keep the car on the road, he poured vodka in her lap, repeatedly grabbed and yanked the steering wheel, pressed her foot on the accelerator pedal, repeatedly remove her seatbelt, pulled up the handbrake and pulled off the controls for the windscreen wipers and headlights.

He threw items from her handbag, including her house keys, one-by-one out of the window.

He punched her repeatedly in the left eye during the trip, only stopping when they reached Kirkcaldy as dawn was breaking and he saw it was completely blackened.

Admitted assault, denied rape

Adsley, formerly of Blackcraigs, Kirkcaldy, pled guilty to two charges of assault, one of them to the danger of life.

He said: “It did happen and I’m not proud of it.”

He claimed when he started boxing in the Army, “it kind of messed up my head”.

He pled not guilty to three charges of rape, one involving multiple instances, and two of sexual assault.

He insisted in the witness box, “I’m not a rapist”.

He claimed he had never had sex with the oldest of the women and sex with the other two was always with their consent.

After a six day trial, a jury took just 45 minutes to find him guilty of all the charges he had denied.

The attacks too place between 2016 and 2020.

All three women were known to Adsley.

Attempted murder

The predator bowed his head in the dock when the unanimous verdicts were announced.

Prosecutor Bill McVicar said Adsley had committed “strikingly similar” crimes against all three women, and appeared to have “regarded his conduct as somehow funny”.

Judge Lord Armstrong deferred sentence for reports until September 14, at the High Court in Inverness.

He warned because of “the number, nature and gravity of the offences”, Adsley faces the imposition of an extended sentence.

He was placed on the Sex Offenders Register with immediate effect

The court heard Adsley is already serving a five-year sentence for attempting to murder a doorman after he was refused entry to a nightclub.

He had been turned away from Kitty’s in Kirkcaldy after drinking and became involved in a fracas, before returning driving a van and hitting the doorman with the vehicle in what a judge called “a revenge attack”.
