Monday court round-up — Bad relationships

A top NHS oncology consultant from Fife has admitted assaulting his wife two days after he claims to have caught her having sex with another man in a car he bought her.

Dr Devraj Srinivasan appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court to admit the domestically aggravated assault, which took place just days earlier.

Fiscal depute Catherine Stevenson explained that at around 9.45pm on July 28, the pair had been having an argument about divorce proceedings as they made their way upstairs at home.

As the pair argued, Srinivasan, 42, struck the woman with his hand on her back and to the back of her head, near her neck.

She was not injured.

When she phoned police, he said: “I confess to what happened, come and arrest me.”

His solicitor explained Srinivasan had been aware of his partner’s affair since March but that the situation had worsened when he caught her having sex with another man in a car he bought her two days earlier.

He asked for an absolute discharge to be considered, which Sheriff McCulloch said remains an option.

First offender Srinivasan, who works with NHS Lothian, was released on bail as Sheriff Grant McCulloch continued his case until November 9.

He was ordered not to enter the couple’s family home in Magnus Drive, Dunfermline, before then.

Unpaid work for causing death

A woman who killed her boyfriend when she drove over him in her car in Fife was given unpaid work as an alternative to a prison sentence.

Grace Ross, 21, admitted causing the death by careless driving of her boyfriend Joshua Kerr at a farm in Leslie, Glenrothes in 2020.

Grace Ross killed her boyfriend Joshua Kerr with her car in Fife.

The sentencing judge said he had to take into account any possible disposal which would keep her out of prison.

A family member of Mr Kerr shouted “murderer” at Ross as she left the court.

Leaving the country

A Polish woman caught dousing her husband’s car with fuel in Glenrothes is receiving consular support to help her leave the UK.

Karolina Malkowska appeared at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court accompanied by a Women’s Aid rep to plead guilty to the vandalism.

Malkowska, who still lives in Fife, admitted that on July 21, she poured fuel into the interior of her husband’s car.

Concerned neighbours had to take a lighter out of her hand.

Fiscal depute Catherine Stevenson told the court: “The two witnesses approached the accused who was holding a black fuel can.

“They observed the driver’s seat was wet and had tissues on it.

“One of the witnesses took the can and a lighter from the accused to prevent her from setting fire to the vehicle.”

Police arrived to find Malkowska, 24, “distressed and upset.”

Her solicitor David McLaughlin said she was in a physically and psychologically abusive marriage and had been prevented from returning to her native Poland on multiple occasions.

He said she is now receiving consular assistance to leave the UK.

Sheriff Rona Wark admonished the first offender.

Home alone child

A Dundee health care worker has admitted leaving a child alone at a Kirkton house for more than four months without adequate food or heating. Michelle Williamson, 36, pled guilty to wilfully neglecting the young teenager, leaving them living alone in a cold house, on a filthy mattress on the living room floor and surviving on bowls of cereal.

Michele Williamson will return to Dundee Sheriff Court for sentencing next month.

Bottle threat teen

A teenage girl has admitted threatening police officers in Perth while holding a broken bottle.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, caused a disturbance on Scott Street on January 2.

She appeared at the city’s sheriff court and admitted a charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, likely to cause fear or alarm.

The court heard the teenager, who lives in Perth, made threats of violence towards police officers while in possession of a broken bottle.

Solicitor Paul Ralph said things had “much improved” for the youth since the incident.

Sheriff Alison Michie deferred the case for reports and she will be sentenced on September 7.

Too hungry

Gin-drinking wild camper Charles Matthew smashed his car off the road while on the hunt for food in Highland Perthshire. Perth Sheriff Court heard how the more he drank, the hungrier he got and when he could not go without food jumped in his car to go shopping. He was more than twice the drink-drive limit.

Charles Matthew had been wild camping at Loch Tummel.
