He is alleged to have struck an employee of Marks & Spencer at Gallagher Retail Park, with a glass bottle repeatedly during a struggle in the early hours of Wednesday October 12.
He was also accused of stealing food and drink and having an offensive weapon.
Gray, of Broughty Ferry Road, Dundee made no plea and was remanded in custody.

The popular city centre store reopened to the public on Friday morning, with officers on guard at the front entrance throughout Wednesday and Thursday.
Police said a 46-year-old man was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for treatment.
