Fife civil engineer crushed one police officer’s hand and tried to headbutt another

Greg Brown.

A civil engineer attacked two police officers after they told him to stop drinking in the street.

Officers spotted Greg Brown with the open bottle on Dunfermline’s Carnegie Drive.

After being told to pour it away, the 38-year-old got into a struggle with the constables, crushing the hand of a female officer, identified in court as PC Keiller.

Fiscal depute Eve McKaig told Dunfermline Sheriff Court Brown had repeatedly tried to walk away from the police who arrived in a patrol car.

She said: “He was asked to put the bottle in the bin and not drink in public.

“At this, the accused replied ‘make me’.

“As PC Keiller exited the car the accused was asked to provide his details.

“He stated he had done nothing wrong and would not be providing them.

“At this point he was walking away, stating he was away home in a taxi.

“PC Keiller told him to provide his details first and placed her hand on his left arm.

“He grabbed her left hand and proceeded to squeeze it.”

Tried to headbutt male officer

Despite her hand remaining in Brown’s grip, the officer was able to get handcuffs on him as her male colleague assisted.

Brown tried to headbutt the male officer.

Brown, of Rintoul Avenue, Blairhall, admitted assaulting two police officers on July 19 2020.

His defence solicitor Ian Beatson said Brown, who is currently studying for a masters in civil engineering, was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

He said: “He accepts it was not acceptable to act in that manner and very much regrets this incident.

“He accepts they were only doing their job and he should not have acted in the way he did.”

Sheriff Wylie Robertson told Brown were it not for a gap in his record – he last offended in 2016 – a custodial sentence could have been imposed.

Instead he ordered Brown to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and placed him on a 15-month supervision order.
