He had been a familiar face after working for years in the Green Street practice, which became Academy Street Medical Centre. He retired in 1992 and is understood to have two daughters. He had gone on to author several books and research papers in his retirement. Tributes were paid to him locally in the wake of his death, as a massive police presence descended on the normally-quiet neighbourhood.
