A Fife Buckfast thief has been granted his wish of going to prison to sober up.
David Watson appeared from custody at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court to admit pilfering the tonic wine from McColl’s on Peploe Drive in Glenrothes on December 21.
Fiscal depute Amy Robertson said the bottle was worth approximately £8.
Watson’s solicitor Lee Qumsieh said the 40-year-old had cut back on his offending since being released from his last prison sentence in July.
“By in large, he seems to have remained out of trouble,” he said.
“He committed the offence out of desperation.
“His alcohol misuse has reached a point he’d rather just receive a sentence.”
Prison wish granted
Sheriff Timothy Niven-Smith jailed Watson, of Lumphinnans Road in Lochgelly, for two months.
The sheriff said: “There’s no violence involved in this case and no weapon involved.
“For him, it’s at the lowest end of the scale.
“It’s regrettable you find yourself in the situation you are.
“I’m not going to stand in the way of you drying out.”
Dolmio sauce attack
Three years ago, Watson was jailed for robbing a different McColl’s in Glenrothes and attacking an employee there with a jar of Dolmio sauce.
Watson leaped over the counter and held a jagged piece of wood at the worker’s throat in the mid-afternoon encounter at the Huntsman Road store.
He was jailed for 35 months after admitting throwing the glass sauce jar at the employee and “lunging” at him with the sharp piece of wood, striking him on the neck to his injury, and robbing the store of the charity tin containing a quantity of money.
