An Angus man has been jailed for more than a year after carrying out two “extremely violent” attacks on his partner.
Stephen Napier, from Arbroath, began one sickening attack by verbally abusing his partner in her own home in the town.
He woke her by calling her a “beast,” a “paedophile” and a “scummy a**ehole”.
She followed him downstairs and he seized her by the head and body.
Napier then pushed the woman, who fell to the ground and landed on a ceramic mug, which smashed and left her with a laceration in her right hand.
She fled the property and tried to call for help at a broken pay phone but ended up taking refuge at a neighbour’s home, where her wound was bandaged.
When police arrived, intoxicated Napier was asleep on the sofa.
The woman was taken to Ninewells where her cut was closed with stitches.
Second brutal attack
After the April 2 attack, Napier was given strict bail conditions not to contact the woman at a court hearing but he breached them on June 22.
Police found the woman and her belongings outside Napier’s James Street home.
On July 28, Napier injured the woman again in another “nasty” attack.
He woke in her flat and seized her by the neck, digging his nails into her skin.
At Forfar Sheriff Court, he admitted both assaults – acting abusively on the first occasion – and breaching his bail order.
Solicitor Sarah Russo said the 32-year-old was under the influence of both alcohol and drugs during the attacks.
She said since Napier had been remanded on September 2, he had been working in the prison cookhouse but said “his record speaks for itself”.
‘Appalling record’
Sheriff Derek Reekie jailed Napier for 432 days, backdated to September.
The sheriff pointed out Napier has six previous domestic convictions, has breached bail six times and has eight other court order breaches.
He labelled the assaults “extremely violent” and said he had “no hesitation” in imposing a non-harassment order protecting Napier’s victim for two years.
The sheriff said: “These are nasty assaults demonstrating a highly unpleasant attitude towards the lady.
“The nature of this is utterly appalling.
“I take the view that these charges demonstrate a disgusting and violent attitude towards your partner at the time.
“You have an appalling record of previous convictions.”
