A driver was caught behind the wheel with cannabis in his system after colleagues pranked him by putting an L-plate on his works van.
Ewan Law was found to be more than three times the limit for the drug after being stopped on the A92.
Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court heard he had been working late on the day in question and had then had gone out with friends.
Solicitor Katie Stewart, defending, said Law was likely to lose his job as an apprentice joiner as a result of his conviction.
She said there was further context to the police deciding to search Law.
“His colleagues had foolishly placed L-plates on the back of his vehicle and police had pulled him over in relation to this.
“But it became clear that they could smell cannabis.
“He had been working his normal nine-to-five and had done some additional work to 9.30pm.
“He then met up with some friends.
“He accepts he was completely reckless.
“He accepts the risk this caused to himself but also to the public.
“He’s going to lose his job as a result of this offence.”
Herbal material found in van
Fiscal depute Jill Currie told the court the Vauxhall Combo van was searched at around 11.30pm after police it parked in a layby.
“They could smell cannabis.
“The accused was searched and there was a negative result but in a search of the van, green herbal material was found.”
She said Law admitted it was his.
Law, of Dunfermline Road, Crossgates, admitted driving on the A92 near the Thornton bypass with excess delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (7mics/ 2) – the main psychoactive substance in cannabis – in his system on May 25 last year.
Sheriff James Williamson banned the 22-year-old from the roads for 12 months and fined him £400.
