Police uncovered a cache of drugs, ammunition and a rifle in a raid on a Carnoustie house.
Officers found thousands of pounds worth of cannabis resin, cash, a tick-list and the operational firearm stuffed in the wall-space of Brian Conway’s home following a tip-off in April 2021.
Unemployed Conway had been “out of trouble” for some time, Dundee Sheriff Court heard but does have a criminal past including convictions for violence.
Depute fiscal Lynne Mannion told the court: “On April 23, police attended at the accused’s house on Burnside Gardens.
“The accused answered the door.
“He said there were some drugs in the kitchen.
“A full search of the property was carried out.
“A tick-list, scales, £6,420 cash and £3,690 cannabis resin were found.”
Rifle and ammunition
Ms Conway continued: “During the search a weapon and ammunition were found.
“It was a bolt action rifle and .22 cartridges.
“It had Parker-Hale branding on the side and a sound modifier.
“It was in poor condition but was in working order.
“A magazine of live ammunition was also found in the wall space.
“The accused’s DNA was found on the magazines.”
The court moved for forfeiture of the weapon and ammunition.
Grandfather’s weapon
Defence solicitor Jim Caird, in mitigation for Conway, said: “It has been some time since he was in trouble, most recently for a road traffic matter.
“Obviously this is a very serious matter.
“He is well aware there is a background.
“The rifle had belonged to his grandfather, who was a farm worker.
“He discovered it two years ago when clearing out his property.”
Sheriff Paul Brown continued bail for Conway, of Burnside Gardens, Carnoustie and called for background reports, deferring sentencing until February 21.
He warned Conway to “come prepared” for a custodial sentence when he returns in February.
Conway admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis resin, possessing a firearm and live ammunition on April 23 2021 at his home.
