A woman who believed her husband was keeping secrets from her tried to set him on fire in their Dundee home.
Farah Al-Nuaimi, 34, of Court Street, flew into a rage after her partner took a phone call — which was actually from his daughter from a previous relationship — earlier this year.
She first lit a napkin, threatening to “burn the house down”, before taking the lighter to his jumper.
Her husband was able to wrestle control of the lighter from her grasp, before he called the police.
Al-Nuaimi admitted to culpable and reckless conduct by setting fire to a napkin to the danger and risk of her partner, and the assault of her partner by setting his clothes on fire, on January 9 2023.
Fire threat
Depute fiscal Sarah High told Dundee Sheriff Court: “The witness and the accused have been married for about one year.
“The complainer received a call from his daughter – he took the call in private in another room.
“She (the accused) became upset and thought he was hiding something from her.”
Later in the evening, Al-Nuaimi’s anger peaked.
Ms High said: “She said she would ‘burn this house down’ and lit a napkin.
“She then threw it on the floor of the living room.
“She then approached the complainer with the lighter.
“She attempted to set his jumper on fire.
“The complainer attempted to restrain her. He held her on the floor.
“Police were contacted, attended the property and inquiries were carried out.
“She was cautioned and charged and responded to charge one: ‘I did not mean to set the flat on fire. I was angry. He pushed me to do it.’”
Keen to return home
Defence solicitor Kevin Hampton, in mitigation, said his client was originally from London and moved to Dundee for a “fresh start”.
“She had suspected something untoward.
“She is genuinely at a loss to explain what happened.”
He said both parties want to resume their relationship.
He added: “She appreciates it is a serious matter.”
Sheriff George Way deferred sentence until February 23 for reports and allowed Al-Nuaimi’s bail order to continue.
However, it contains a condition preventing her from returning to the Court Street flat or her husband.
The sheriff added: “She needs to understand she might not be back at the address for some time.”
