A Monifieth paedophile caught with child abuse files years after he downloaded them has had his computer seized.
Ian Smith returned to the dock at Dundee Sheriff Court to be sentenced, having previously admitted taking or making indecent images of children.
The 51-year-old’s home in Grangehill Drive, Monifieth, was raided by police on October 6 2021.
Officers had been made aware of intelligence which suggested child sex abuse material was being accessed from a device at that address.
Smith, who was at the time unemployed and a carer for his elderly mother, had his computer tower seized by police.
On it, they found a Category B video depicting child abuse which lasted for more than five and a half minutes.
Another two images, rated as Category B were found and the device was sent for analysis.
More Category B and C images were found to be accessible.
Traces of inaccessible images were also uncovered.
The creation dates of the files ranged from October 2018 to October 2019.
Sentenced
Smith’s only other conviction is for a breach of the peace in 2003, for which he was fined.
Solicitor James Caird said: “He obviously pled guilty and takes full responsibility for these matters.”
Mr Caird encouraged Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown to follow the recommendations of social workers who interviewed Smith after he pled guilty.
The sheriff opted to do so.
She made Smith subject to supervision for three years and placed him on the Sex Offenders Register for as long.
The sheriff also ordered Smith to complete the Moving Forward: Making Changes programme to rehabilitate sex offenders.
She granted a Crown motion to forfeit Smith’s computer and imposed a string of strict conduct requirements.
Smith must not have unsupervised contact with anyone under 16 unless pre-approved.
He must also have no contact with any sex offenders without prior approval.
Smith must reside in accommodation approved by his supervisor and only work where they agree is acceptable.
He can only have one mobile phone and one computer and must inform his supervisor of their serial numbers and not clear his history or use incognito tabs.
Smith was also banned from using social media without prior approval.
