An Italian care worker who was not “au fait” with Scottish drink-driving laws crashed his car after taking wine with his evening meal.
Liborio Manisclaco lost his job and may be forced to “relocate” after the accident in Crieff’s Addison Terrace.
The 30-year-old appeared at Perth Sheriff Court and admitted being behind the wheel on March 11, with excess alcohol (33mics/ 22).
Screeching tyres
Fiscal depute Stuart Hamilton said: “At around 7.30pm a witness within their home address heard a loud bang outside.
“This was followed by the sound of screeching tyres and an engine revving.”
The prosecutor told the court: “The witness stepped outside and saw the accused attempting to drive his damaged Volkswagen Fox.
“He stalled and exited the vehicle.”
Police were called to the scene and Manisclaco admitted he had been driving.
“He failed a roadside breath test and was taken to Dundee police HQ,” said Mr Hamilton.
“When he was cautioned and charged, he replied ‘thank you’.”
The fiscal depute said it was not known if Manisclaco, of High Street, Crieff, had struck a kerb or a wall.
Drinking wine
Solicitor Steve Lafferty, defending, said: “Mr Manisclaco has been in the country for two months and has been working as a carer.
“He is an Italian national and has an Italian driving licence.
”Basically, he was not au fait with Scotland’s drink driving legislation.
“He had a couple of glasses of wine with his evening meal and had gone out to buy some cigarettes.”
Mr Lafferty said: “He knows he cannot continue with his career as a carer.
”He will now be looking to relocate.”
Sheriff Mungo Bovey fined Manisclaco £500 and banned him from driving for a year.
