A racist thug abused and spat on a vulnerable Bulgarian woman on a busy Broughty Ferry street, telling her to “go back to Romania”.
Bigot David Gibson took umbrage at his victim, who was reportedly begging outside Tesco supermarket on Brook Street.
Gibson was only prevented from causing the woman further grief after a man in a wheelchair – who was collecting money for charity – intervened by placing his mobility device between the abuser and his victim.
Gibson appeared from custody at Dundee Sheriff Court where he admitted two charges which were racially aggravated.
He is still behind bars, awaiting sentence on a High Court matter of “similarity”, his lawyer David Duncan explained.
Charity fundraiser stopped attack
Depute fiscal Lynne Mannion said: “The complainer – a Bulgarian national – was begging outside the store.
“The accused approached her and said ‘f**k off back to your own country’ and ‘go back to Romania’.
“He made a motion towards her with a clenched fist as if he was going to punch her.
“After entering and leaving the shop, he took his keys from his pocket and started to swing them close to her head.
“He then spat at her.
“A witness in a wheelchair moved between the accused and the complainer.”
Attempted murder
Gibson is remanded awaiting sentence for the attempted murder of his friend Derrick Smith in Dundee city centre after a drinking session while watching football.
Mr Duncan, in mitigation for Gibson, said: “He is remanded but not on this matter.
“He is due to be sentenced at the High Court on a similar, but more serious matter.
“It may be quite a substantial sentence.”
Gibson, of Ward Road, admitted uttering racial remarks and assaulting a woman by attempting to strike her on the head and spitting on her on Brook Street, Broughty Ferry, on January 28 2022.
Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown deferred sentence to allow the other matters to call at the High Court.
Gibson, who has 50 convictions, will return for sentencing in June.
By that time, he should have been dealt with for his attack on Mr Smith in June 2022.
He battered the man so badly he could only later be identified in hospital by his tattoos.
He left him lying in the street until a passerby found him the next morning and called an ambulance.
Mr Smith, 46, now receives care in a home after suffering brain damage.
Gibson was caught because witnesses told police about his distinctive lack of front teeth.
