A machinist glassed a Ferry punter in a Christmas party fracas after having too much to drink, a court has heard.
Terry Massie, 35, had been on a rare night out with colleagues when he became embroiled in an incident at the Fort Bar.
Crossing a busy dance floor the weekend before Christmas, Massie launched his glass tumbler towards the head of Jack Grey, who had apparently become upset at being bumped into by his assailant.
Dundee Sheriff Court heard Massie does not have any issues with alcohol or drugs, and was not a regular drinker.
But on this occasion he had taken on “too much”, leading to the reckless assault on Mr Grey.
Reacted to ‘bump’
Depute fiscal Lynne Mannion told the court: “The incident took place at the Fort Hotel.
“Beforehand, neither the accused nor the complainer were known to one another.
“Mr Grey is a regular patron of the Fort.
“That evening both were in the locus with other parties and had consumed alcohol.
“At around 11.35pm the accused walked across the dance floor.
“He was headed to the exit. He walked past the complainer.”
The court heard Massie bumped into Mr Grey, who reacted.
Ms Mannion continued: “Mr Grey told the accused to keep walking.
“The accused punched out with his hand, holding a glass tumbler.
“He struck out as if to punch him and released the glass.
“It struck Mr Grey to the forehead, leaving a cut.”
Mr Grey was taken to Ninewells for treatment, receiving paper stitches and the cut has left a permanent scar on his head.
‘Slight provocation’
Defence solicitor Mike Short, in mitigation for Massie, said: “He has never been in bother before and never will again.
“It was a Christmas night out.
“He is not a drinker but he had too much to drink that night.
“He feels sorry for the complainer and does not try to blame him for what happened.
“There was a slight provocation but one shouldn’t rise to raised hands.”
Massie, of Chapel Place, admitted assault to permanent injury on December 18 2021.
Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown deferred sentence for reports until June 15.
