Former SNP councillor Craig Melville will appear in court next month over allegations he sent a number of abusive text messages, allegedly aggravated by religious prejudice.
Melville, a former SNP councillor for the Maryfield ward, allegedly sent a series of texts containing threatening, abusive and derogatory remarks regarding people of the Muslim faith in November 2015.
It is alleged Melville “did behave in a threatening manner which was likely to cause a reasonable person fear and alarm” between November 13 and November 15 by sending a number of text messages that contained “threatening, abusive and derogatory remarks regarding Muslims”.
The accused, who also worked at one time as an aide to Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie, entered no plea at Dundee Sheriff Court on Friday. The case was continued until July 7. Melville was not in attendance.
Melville stepped down from the city council in February of last year, after the allegations first came to light and he was charged by police in April 2016, triggering a by-election.
